J.P. Murphy Playground at 1960 9th Avenue has 3 tennis courts, all reservable on rec.us for $5 per court per hour, in 90-minute slots. There are restrooms but no lights, so plan on daylight play.
Where the courts are
Rec.us says to enter the courts via 9th Avenue. Rec & Park describes the site as a playground with a play structure, three tennis courts and a basketball court, plus a community room.

Rec & Park limits each person to 1 reservation a day and 3 a week, for individual play only. Unbooked courts are open for walk-up play, and a booking left empty 15 minutes after the start time becomes walk-up time. See how to book a tennis court.
When you play on an open court, the city’s walk-up rules apply: a 5-minute warm-up, one set or 30 minutes when others are waiting, and doubles when four or more are waiting. More in the walk-up courts guide.
Hours, lights and restrooms
- Court hours: 7:30am to 7:30pm on rec.us. The park is open 5am to midnight.
- Lights: none.
- Restrooms: yes, 8am to 8pm in spring and summer and 8am to 5:30pm in fall and winter per Rec & Park.
- Wall and pickleball: no practice wall and no pickleball courts are listed here.
Getting there on Muni
- 6 Hayes/Parnassus: stops at Ortega St & 9th Ave.
- 43 Masonic and 44 O’Shaughnessy: both stop at Laguna Honda Blvd & Clarendon Ave.
If the courts are full
- Golden Gate Heights Park, 12th Avenue and Rockridge (also Inner Sunset & Golden Gate Heights): 2 walk-up courts, no lights and no restrooms.
- Goldman Tennis Center, 50 Bowling Green Drive in Golden Gate Park: 16 lighted courts, booked and paid through CourtReserve, open 7am to 10pm.

Tip: if you miss courts 1 and 2 at 8am a week out, court 3 offers the same 90-minute slots two days ahead at noon. For an evening match after 7:30pm, Goldman is the lighted option listed on this page.
