Updated October 2026. Tennis City SF › Tennis Courts in North Beach & Chinatown
Joe DiMaggio Playground at 651 Lombard Street in North Beach has 3 lighted tennis courts. Courts 1 and 2 are free walk-up courts, and court 3 can be reserved on rec.us for $5 per hour, 7 days ahead at 8am.
Where the courts are
The playground fills the block at Lombard Street and Columbus Avenue. Rec.us says to enter the tennis courts south of the playground entrance, at Columbus Avenue and Greenwich Street. The courts are unlocked. Rec & Park notes the park was called North Beach Playground until it was renamed in 2000, and a $7.5 million renovation in 2005 rebuilt the clubhouse.
Courts, booking and walk-up
| Court | How to play | Release |
|---|---|---|
| 1 and 2 | Walk-up, first come, first served | No booking |
| 3 | Reservable, 90-minute slots starting at 7:30am | 7 days ahead at 8am |
Reservations are limited to 1 a day and 3 a week per person, for individual play only. If court 3 is unbooked, or a booking is unclaimed 15 minutes after the start, anyone can use it. See how to book a tennis court.
On courts 1 and 2 the posted city rules apply: a 5-minute warm-up, one set or 30 minutes when others are waiting, doubles when four or more are waiting, and you must be there in person to hold a place. See the walk-up courts guide and court etiquette.
