Updated October 2026. Tennis City SF
To find a tennis partner in San Francisco, post a day, time, court and your NTRP level in a local player group, or sign up for a league or social event that pairs you with people at your level. The quickest option for a one-off hit is the Tennis City SF Slack group (1,794 players as of October 2026, $5 a year, one channel per NTRP level from 2.5 to 4.5). For guaranteed weekly matches, join a league: TennisSF, USTA Flex, UTR Flex or a USTA NorCal team. For meeting people in person, go to Tennis Coalition SF’s $10 Community Social Doubles at Goldman Tennis Center, a Goldman round robin, a GLTF social, or a free TMAC session.
The options below were checked on each organization’s own site in October 2026. Prices change, so confirm on the linked page before you pay.
Quick answer: which option should I pick?
- “I want to play this week with someone at my level.” Post in the Tennis City SF Slack group. See how to ask someone to hit for message templates.
- “I want a guaranteed match every week or two.” Join a flex league (TennisSF, USTA Flex or UTR Flex). The league finds your opponents; you schedule the matches.
- “I want team tennis and to get competitive.” Join a USTA NorCal team. You need a USTA membership, an NTRP rating and a captain.
- “I just moved here and want to meet people.” Go to an in-person social: Tennis Coalition SF Community Social Doubles, a Goldman round robin, GLTF socials, or TMAC’s free Volleys & Vibes sessions. Then trade numbers with the people you liked playing with.
- “I’m a beginner.” Take a group class first (see lessons in San Francisco); classmates are often your first hitting partners. The Slack group welcomes players from NTRP 2.5.

How to join a USTA team in San Francisco without knowing anyone
- Buy a USTA membership ($44 a year for adults).
- Get an NTRP rating. If you have never played USTA, self-rate online; it takes 2 to 3 business days.
- Find a captain. Email USTA NorCal’s Get Connected program ([email protected]), ask GLTF or Golden Gate Tennis Club, or ask in the Slack group.
- Once the captain approves you, register for the team from your NorCal player profile and pay the $33 league fee.
If you just moved to San Francisco
A good plan is to combine one online channel with one in-person event. Post a “new to SF” message in the Slack group with your neighborhood, level and free times, then go to a social doubles night or round robin and ask the players you enjoyed for a rematch. FAQ
How do I find tennis players in San Francisco?
Post your level, a day, a time and a court in a local player group such as the Tennis City SF Slack group (1,794 players, $5 a year), or join a league (TennisSF, USTA Flex, UTR Flex, USTA NorCal) that schedules opponents at your level. For in-person meetups, try Tennis Coalition SF’s $10 Community Social Doubles at Goldman Tennis Center.
Is there a free way to find a hitting partner in SF?
Yes. TMAC membership and its Volleys & Vibes open sessions are free. Many public courts are free and first come, first served when not reserved. The Tennis City SF Slack group costs $5 a year.
What tennis groups are there in San Francisco?
The main ones are the Tennis City SF Slack group, TennisSF (Tennis League Network), Tennis Coalition SF (social doubles, UTR Flex League, SF City Championships), GLTF, TMAC, the San Francisco Tennis Meetup, Golden Gate Tennis Club, and USTA NorCal teams.
What if I don’t know my NTRP rating?
Rate yourself with the NTRP guide and say “about 3.0” or “3.0 to 3.5” in your post. Most recreational players in SF groups are between 2.5 and 4.5.
I’m a beginner. Can I still find people to play with?
Yes. The Slack group has channels starting at NTRP 2.5, and Goldman Tennis Center runs group classes from Beginning level up. You can post for a rally only (“just want to hit, no score”).
When is it easiest to find a partner?
In the Slack group, early weekday mornings and weekend mornings get the most replies. September and October usually have the best weather; November through March is the rainy season, so expect more cancellations.
How do I find a fourth for doubles?
Post the time, court and level range in the Slack group (“Need a 4th, Sun 8 to 10am, Mission Dolores, 3.5 to 4.0, court reserved”), or go to a social doubles event where partners rotate.
Is it safe to meet a tennis partner from the internet?
Meet at a public court, share your plans with a friend if you like, and trust your instincts. Every Slack member paid and agreed to the group’s terms of service, which keeps out most spam accounts. See also court etiquette for what to expect on court.
