Updated October 2026. Tennis City SF › San Francisco Tennis Guides
When rain closes San Francisco’s public courts city-wide, Rec & Park gives full rec.us credits for reservations from the time the rain starts, but it gives no credit for day-to-day court conditions. At Goldman Tennis Center, rain-interrupted court time is credited, classes can be cancelled for weather, and are cancelled for smoke at AQI 151 or higher or heat of 103°F or more, with one make-up.
Rec & Park courts
| Situation | What you get |
|---|---|
| City-wide rain closure | Full credits for reservations, as of when the rain starts |
| Day-to-day court conditions | No credit |
| You cancel 48 hours ahead (March to November) or 24 hours ahead (December to February) | $3 per hour credit |
| You cancel later, or don’t show | Nothing; repeated no-shows can lead to suspension |
Rec & Park doesn’t give refunds, only credits. For what to do once the rain stops, see rainy day tennis. Rec & Park’s athletic field rain-out page covers sports fields, not tennis courts.
Goldman Tennis Center
- Court reservations: court time interrupted by rain is credited. Cancel at least 4 hours ahead or you pay the full fee.
- Classes and camps: call 415-581-2540 no earlier than 60 minutes before class. Goldman doesn’t cancel more than 60 minutes ahead because conditions change quickly. Cancellations go out by email and in the CourtReserve app (you must opt in to app notifications).
- Make-ups: each cancelled class gets one make-up, which may be on a different day or time. If a make-up can’t be scheduled, you get a credit at the end of the session. Winter 2027 has a makeup week, March 1 to 7.
- Smoke: based on AirNow.gov. At AQI 151 or higher, all programs are cancelled with a make-up. At 101 to 150, programs run, and people with sensitivities can request an accommodation before class.
- Heat: programs are cancelled with a make-up at 103°F or higher.
- Holidays: the pro shop is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and closes at 12:30pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Scheduled uses that take courts
- Classes and tournaments: on walk-up courts, authorized classes and tournaments have priority over open play.
- School tennis: at Moscone Rec Center in the Marina, high school tennis uses the courts 3 to 6pm in season.
- Pickleball schedules: some courts switch between tennis and pickleball on a posted schedule, including Moscone courts 3 and 4, Rossi court 3 and Presidio Wall. See pickleball sharing.
- Closing time: Presidio Wall has no lights and closes at 6pm November to February and 7:30pm March to October.
Resurfacing and renovation
Courts close for resurfacing from time to time, and Rec & Park posts these in its news updates. For example, Margaret S. Hayward Playground’s courts were closed for resurfacing from October 26, 2020 and reopened in early November, and Rec & Park suggested Alamo Square and Hamilton as nearby alternatives. Earlier in that renovation, the courts reopened June 29, 2019 with new windscreens. To find an alternative near you, use the court map.

FAQ
Do I get my money back if it rains on my rec.us court?
You get a credit, not a refund. Rec & Park gives full credits for city-wide rain closures as of when the rain starts.
Is Goldman class cancelled when it rains?
It may be. Call 415-581-2540 within 60 minutes of class, or watch email and the CourtReserve app. Cancelled classes get one make-up.
Are tennis classes cancelled for wildfire smoke?
At Goldman, yes, when the AQI on AirNow.gov is 151 or higher.
