Doubles is the most popular way to play in San Francisco, and it’s often easier to get a court for four. The hard part is finding three other people at the same level on the same day. These are the options that work.
Filling a fourth at short notice
- Post in the Tennis City SF Slack group in the channel for your level, with the court, time, level and “need a 4th”. Use the message templates.
- Keep a list of 6 to 8 people at your level. Asking the whole list at once fills a spot faster than one at a time.
- Book the court first. A confirmed court makes people far more likely to say yes.
Regular doubles groups
- Social doubles: Tennis Coalition SF’s monthly Community Social Doubles at Goldman ($10, NTRP 3.0 to 4.0), Goldman round robins and GLTF socials mix you with new partners.
- Leagues: USTA NorCal doubles and mixed doubles teams, USTA Flex and UTR Flex doubles, and TennisSF mixed doubles. See leagues.
Keeping it fair
Doubles works best when all four players are within about half a NTRP level. Say your level honestly when you post; see NTRP ratings explained. Split the court fee, and rotate who books.
FAQ
Do walk-up courts favor doubles?
Yes. When four or more people are waiting at a Rec & Park walk-up court, the posted rule is to play doubles.
