Updated October 2026. Tennis City SF › San Francisco Tennis Guides
Most San Francisco players use public courts, but a few private clubs offer guaranteed court time, indoor courts for rainy days, and built-in leagues and clinics. Membership is expensive, so it’s worth knowing what each offers.
The main clubs
- Bay Club SF Tennis, 645 5th St, SoMa. Indoor and rooftop outdoor courts; the city’s main indoor tennis option. 7×7 has reported weekday non-member court time.
- Bay Club at the Gateway, 370 Drumm St, near the Embarcadero. Formerly the Golden Gateway Tennis & Swim Club; outdoor courts.
- California Tennis Club, 1770 Scott St, Pacific Heights. A historic, members-only tennis club, often described as the oldest west of the Mississippi.
- Presidio YMCA runs a tennis program with courts and lessons for members.
Court counts, fees and guest policies change. Check with each club directly.
Is a club worth it?
| A club makes sense if you | Public courts are fine if you |
|---|---|
| Want guaranteed prime-time courts | Can book 7 days ahead or play off-peak |
| Want to keep playing in winter rain | Don’t mind skipping wet days |
| Want clinics and leagues in one place | Are happy with USTA, Flex and TennisSF leagues |
A middle option is Goldman Tennis Center: public, reservable, 16 lighted courts, with classes and round robins.
