San Francisco has a few dedicated tennis shops that string racquets, plus pro shops at clubs. Call ahead for turnaround times and prices, which change.
Where to get a racquet strung
- Goldman Tennis Center pro shop, 50 Bowling Green Drive, Golden Gate Park. Stringing (labor-only and rush options listed on its pro shop page), balls and gear. Handy if you play there.
- Golden State Tennis, 5129 Geary Blvd, Richmond District. A tennis shop offering stringing, usually next day.
- City Racquet Shop, San Jose Avenue, near Glen Park. A long-running neighborhood racquet shop, now under a new owner.
- California Tennis Club has a pro shop for its members.
Tennis Coalition SF keeps a list of tennis shops and services.
How often to restring
- A common rule of thumb: restring as many times a year as you play per week. Play twice a week, restring twice a year.
- Polyester strings lose tension quickly; players using poly often restring more often.
- If the ball feels dead, or you’ve noticed less control, it’s probably time.
FAQ
