Kids and Family Tennis in San Francisco

Updated October 2026. Tennis City SF › New to San Francisco? A Tennis Starter Guide

For young kids in San Francisco, the main structured option is Goldman Tennis Center’s youth program: Little Tennis starts at age 4, and 8-week winter 2027 classes cost $327 to $336 for residents. SF resident kids 17 and under play free on Goldman courts on weekday daytimes, USTA membership is free for juniors, and need-based scholarships cover resident youth ages 4 to 16.

After Play!, Goldman’s Junior Development Teams (Bronze, Silver and Gold, ages 8 to 15) lead to local league play, travel teams and USTA tournaments. Goldman also runs a fall-to-spring Tennis Acceleration Program and posts holiday and one-day camp schedules.

Free and low-cost options

  • Free court time at Goldman: San Francisco resident youth play free Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, but only when every player on the court is a youth. If an adult plays too, the free rate doesn’t apply. Goldman also has 4 multi-use mini courts.
  • Scholarships: Goldman offers need-based scholarships for SF resident youth ages 4 to 16 in group lessons.
  • USTA junior membership: free for players 18 and under.
  • Walk-up courts: free at Rec & Park parks. See free tennis.

City and nonprofit programs

  • Rec & Park lessons: beginning youth lessons are offered at parks across the city, and many licensed instructors list junior lessons on sflessons.rec.us. Tennis Coalition SF also lists intermediate and advanced after-school lessons at Palega Rec Center and High Performance Juniors in Golden Gate Park.
  • QuickStart Junior Tennis Academy: listed by Tennis Coalition SF as a Rec & Park and USTA Northern California program using smaller racquets, larger balls and smaller courts. Check sfrecpark.org for current sessions.
  • Tennis + Learning Center (TLC): a Rec & Park out-of-school program that combines tennis with academic support for elementary grades K to 5. It has served the Western Addition, Chinatown, Portola and Bayview Hunters Point since 2014.
  • Youth Tennis Advantage: a nonprofit serving Bay Area inner-city youth.

Playing as a family on public courts

Reserving a Rec & Park court ($5 per court per hour on rec.us) gives you a set time without the walk-up rotation, which is easier with young kids. Reservations are for individual play only, so you can’t use them to run a lesson. Tip: if your kids will need a restroom, check before you go. Per our court data, Alice Marble, Buena Vista, States Street, Peixotto, Noe Valley Courts, Jackson Playground, Golden Gate Heights, Junipero Serra and Aptos have no restrooms. Browse by area on courts and read court etiquette.
