Updated October 2026. Tennis City SF › New to San Francisco? A Tennis Starter Guide
The quickest way to get a verified UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) in San Francisco is to play a UTR Flex SF league: four verified matches against local opponents, over 5 weeks for singles or 8 weeks for doubles. USTA league and tournament matches also count. USTA team leagues still place you by NTRP, so you may need both.
How UTR works
- Scale: every player, from recreational to pro, is rated on one scale from 1 to 16.50, based on actual match results.
- Window: the rating uses match scores from the last 12 months.
- Verified UTR counts only results from verified tournaments and events.
- Standard UTR counts all results. Casual or practice matches and scores you post yourself count only toward the standard rating.
- USTA matches: USTA league and tournament results count toward both verified and standard UTR.
For how UTR compares with NTRP and the World Tennis Number, see NTRP ratings.
UTR Flex SF leagues
The San Francisco Tennis Flex Leagues club on UTR Sports had 1,848 members in October 2026. You register and are paired with local opponents for four verified UTR matches.
| Season | Dates | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Doubles | Nov 4, 2026 to Jan 13, 2027 (8 weeks of play) | From $70 per team |
| Singles | Nov 11 to Dec 15, 2026 (5 weeks of play) | From $35.99 |
Divisions are co-ed and span UTR 1.0 to 16.0. Register with “Register for Flex Leagues” on the club page. The doubles season that started August 26 and the singles season that started September 30 were still running in late October.
Goldman Tennis Center UTR club
Lifetime Activities runs a UTR digital club for Goldman Tennis Center players (club 12089 on the UTR app). Members can find players at the same level and contact them through the platform, and track their rating. Lifetime says the platform supports level-based socials, events and lesson programs, and that it plans to bring UTR into its programs. It does not list specific UTR events or prices; call 415-581-2540.
UTR or NTRP: which you need
| If you want to | You need |
|---|---|
| Join a USTA NorCal team | An NTRP rating (self-rate online, 2 to 3 business days). See joining a USTA team. |
| Play UTR Flex SF | A UTR account; divisions are by UTR |
| Find a hitting partner | Either. Most local players describe themselves by NTRP; see finding a partner. |
Tip: because USTA league matches count toward UTR, a season on a USTA team builds a verified UTR at the same time.
