Updated October 2026. Tennis City SF › Playing Tennis While Visiting San Francisco
To keep training on a short stay in San Francisco, book a one-off lesson with a Rec & Park licensed instructor or a private coach, rent the ball machine at Goldman Tennis Center, and use a free hitting wall on the days between. Goldman’s regular adult classes run in 8-week sessions, so they rarely fit a visit. Its 3-week small-ratio lessons are the closest short-term option.
Options by length of stay

Lessons for a short stay
SF Rec & Park licenses instructors to teach one-on-one and small-group lessons at 20 neighborhood parks. You can browse coaches on rec.us or fill out a short matching form at sflessons.rec.us; program registration is 415-831-6800. Prices vary by instructor. For a wider comparison see lessons and clinics.
Goldman’s Small Ratio Lessons are 50 minutes at a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio, sold in 3-week mini sessions with online registration. The last fall 2026 session runs November 23 to December 13, with no class on Thanksgiving. If you can’t make a date, Goldman lets you send a substitute.
Bringing or hiring a coach on city courts
Rec & Park reservations are for individual play only: no lessons, team practices, clinics or league matches. Park Code Section 3.08 prohibits tennis instruction without a permit. If you hire someone to coach you on a public court, check that they are a Rec & Park licensed instructor.
Ball machine and solo practice
Goldman rents a ball machine for 50 minutes in the mornings and early afternoons, when courts are free and the weather allows. Book on CourtReserve or call 415-581-2540, and cancel at least 4 hours ahead. The ball machine page lists $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents, but the court fee table lists $22 and $28, so confirm when you book. Details in ball machine practice.
For free solo work, Alice Marble Courts (Russian Hill) has a practice wall, and Jose Coronado Playground (Mission) has a lighted backboard. Use is limited to 20 minutes when others are waiting. See hitting walls.
Match play
Training is easier with points at the end. Goldman round robins run four times a week, and Tennis Coalition SF holds a monthly $10 social doubles night. See drop-in tennis, or find a hitting partner through finding a partner.
Strings and racquets
The Goldman pro shop, open 7am to 10pm daily, strings racquets ($25 labor with your own string, $10 extra for 24-hour rush with 4 hours’ notice) and runs a demo program for trying racquets. See racquet stringing.
FAQ
Can I take a single tennis lesson in San Francisco?
Yes. Rec & Park licensed instructors and private coaches on PlayYourCourt sell single lessons. Goldman’s group classes need an 8-week commitment.
Can my coach from home train me on a public court?
Not on a regular basis without a permit. Park Code 3.08 prohibits tennis instruction on city courts without one, and rec.us bookings can’t be used for lessons.
Where can I hit alone?
On the walls at Alice Marble and Jose Coronado, or with a rented ball machine at Goldman.
